A Family Record – A Bristol Orphanage Tribute Sampler is an original design inspired by one of the samplers on display at the George Mueller Museum in Bristol. The photograph shows my family, and motifs that are relevant to us. but instructions are given for you to be able to personalise the sampler and add your own family and those special to you.
This chart was never intended to be followed slavishly. It gives you a wealth of alphabets, borders and motifs that are found on Bristol Orphanage Samplers. It’s not comprehensive. You will find motifs on other Bristol samplers, that are not included here. Feel free to include them. This is your sampler and your family.
I chose a darker red, but please choose your favourite red, or even a pink, if you would like a faded more antique look.

The model was stitched on 46ct Ashley Down, by Tabbycat Hand-dyed Linens, which was especially dyed for the Bristol 4 Retreat, held by
The Attic Needlework 3-5 May 2024.
It was stitched with Soie d’Algers col 3026, and used 1 hank and 3 skeins of thread.
With the exception of the roof of one of the houses, (which is stitched in long satin stitches on the diagonal), the whole sampler is stitched
entirely in cross stitch over two, making it suitable for those who wish to stitch on Aida.
I am away until 1 July. Any orders placed will be sent after this date. If you are going to be at Bristol 5 at The Attic, I look forward to seeing you there. Michele Dismiss
